Types of Disinfection By-Products

DBPs can be organic⁴²,⁴³ [e.g., trihalomethanes, chlorinated phenols, haloketones, haloacetic acids, and haloacetonitriles (HANs)] or inorganic,⁴⁴,⁴⁵,⁴⁶ (e.g. chloramines and cyanogen chloride). The major by-products of DISINFECTION using hypobromous acid (HOBr) and hypochlorous acid (HOCl) are bromoform (CHBr3) and chloroform (CHCl3), respectively.
